甚麼Way of the Dragon…

One day, an elder gentleman, though advanced in his age, still mentally sharp and physically fit, came to seek medical consultation.

Patient: Good morning, Doctor. I’ve come to have my knee… (pointing to the affected area) It’s an old injury… (taking his phone out of his pocket…)

EC*: (Nods in understanding, thinking he was about to be shown an X-ray or some medical report, so I leaned in closer…)

What came into view was indeed a black and white photo, but not an X-ray or a report. Instead, it was a picture of several strong men dressed in 1970s attire. I immediately recognized one of them…

Patient: (pointing to the man in the center of the photo) Do you recognize this person?

EC: (excitedly) Yes, that’s Bruce Lee!

Patient: (very pleased) And this one here, that’s me… (in a very satisfied tone) (Honestly, I couldn’t connect the face from 50 years ago, one of them now masked, to the person in front of me… I thought to myself, if you say so, then it must be true.)

EC: (with a surprised look) Wow, you were so young and handsome, and quite muscular too (trying hard to give a compliment, but he seemed not to hear it… completely ignoring my skills).

Patient: My knee got injured when I was sparring with Bruce Lee in a movie… (He then continued to scroll through his phone, showing more than a dozen photos, talking about his experiences with Bruce Lee, such as in “Way of the Dragon.” This went on for nearly ten minutes before we even began to address his medical issue.)

EC: (nodding continuously) Oh, oh, oh! (But my attention was already on his injured knee.)

I thought to myself, wow, life is truly fascinating! A newly practicing doctor, treating an old injury caused by the legendary Bruce Lee, an internationally renowned Chinese martial artist and founder of Jeet Kune Do. The overlap of time and space… touching the injured area, my mind conjuring images of Bruce Lee’s swift and powerful kicks, almost feeling the intensity of those strikes (I admit, a bit exaggerated), and recognizing that the injury was clearly caused by a lower leg kicking technique.

Who would have thought that a legendary figure, deceased for nearly half a century, would intersect with my life at this moment in such a way, through an injury he caused… Isn’t life truly remarkable?

P.S. In this age that values fact-checking, I have verified the gentleman’s identity. He wasn’t bluffing.

Lesson 3: Western or TCM Approach?

Delaying my clinic visit for makeup classes, I found the old Chinese doctor immersed in brewing medicine upon arrival. Amid discussions on integrating Western and Chinese medicine, the doctor emphasized medicine’s singular goal: patient recovery. He shared cases illustrating the necessity of blending Eastern and Western approaches for optimal care.
